Frequently Asked Questions
So, how do I create a new alias?
There are two main ways to create a new alias:
Option 1: Click the extension icon in your browser toolbar, then click "Create New Alias". Enter a memorable alias name (like "work" or "github") and the destination URL you want it to point to.
Option 2: Type @your-new-alias directly into your browser's address bar. If the alias doesn't exist yet, you'll be redirected to the extension page where you can create it.
You can also add multiple URLs for the same alias—the extension will randomly pick one each time you use it.
How is this different from a bookmark?
Bookmarks are great, but they can be a bit slow to use. If you like to stick to your keyboard, this is for you!
How is this different from services like golinks.io and trot.to?
We're a local-first implementation of the same idea. No monthly subscriptions, no usage limits, no strings attached. Ah, and did we say this was free?
Is my data private and secure?
All of your aliases stay on your device! This matters because we know URLs can be sensitive (you know, the links that anyone with the link can access...). There's no intermediary server, no cloud storage, no tracking, no analytics, no cookies, no nothing.
Do I need to create an account or sign up?
Nope! Just install the extension and start creating aliases immediately. No accounts, no passwords, no emails.
Why is it so fast?
Glad you asked... Did we already mention that your aliases stay on your device? So yeah, that's why it's fast.
What happens if AWS goes down, yet again?
Well, the site that you'd want to redirect to might be down... but our extension will do its job just fine!
Wait, so I don't need to fight with other users for popular names like @work or @github?
Your aliases are your own. You don't need to hire a "go link admin". Your @dev alias goes where you want it to. No turf wars, no conflicts, just your personal shortcuts.
